Short thesis
Description
This session will be held in German and will be translated into English.
Making knowledge work on YouTube: “Terra X Lesch & Co”
Is it possible to be successful on YouTube with sophisticated science content and a professor presenting it? Terra X Lesch & Co demonstrates how it’s done. It was a great adventure for us when we went to YouTube two years ago, in February 2015 with our noted ZDF documentary brand Terra X and the established ZDF host and professor Harald Lesch – after all, the platform is known as a playground for the young and wild. Conveying research and knowledge topics with a high standard, prompting reflection and discussion. And in the process reaching an audience which is increasingly difficult to access via classic TV. Can this work? We say: yes! After two years, we have reached roughly 250,000 subscribers and a total of 20 million views with our weekly videos. More than 1,000 mostly high-level comments show how intensively users are engaging with the topics. And on videos, at that, which range from the subject of the “world formula” or “parallel universes” all the way to the question of “why we (almost) never change our political opinion”. What is the secret to their success? What are the challenges in operating a channel of this type? What are their oddest stories? Terra X head editor Friederike Haedecke, producer Mirko Drotschmann (“MrWissen2go”) and Professor Harald Lesch show highlights from their videos, give accounts of their work and offer pointers for YouTube beginners.
